Owning a production-grade ecommerce sandbox changed how we scope every brief.
We used to scope ecommerce work the way most agencies do — from documentation, screenshots, and the client's staging site. The estimates were always approximate, the surprises always expensive.
What changed
We paid for our own Shopify Plus instance. It costs more than a coffee budget, less than a hire. It runs every integration we've ever built, and every kind of catalogue we've worked on.
The difference shows up in three places: scoping, demos, and onboarding. Scopes get tighter because we test before we promise. Demos land harder because the client can click through a real version. Onboarding shrinks because new engineers learn against the sandbox, not against client production.
What we'd do differently
We'd have done it sooner.
